Death Note: What are some of the plot holes of Death Note?

The answers here are really good points, the only thing I'll add that I haven't seen answered is less a plot hole per se, and more of just a physical impossibility. The ending was, in my opinion, on par with a deus ex machina for Near.

Mikami breaks with his consistent schedule to ensure the death of Takada, confirming the suspicion that there are two death notes. Okay, I can accept that, makes sense (eh, kind of, really how likely is it that its Mikami among all those people. Whatever, not the point). What I cannot accept is that Stephen Gevanni managed to over night copy and replace the whole notebook with zero distinction.

Let's say, Gevanni actually had a few weeks to do so, he is a talented forger, so perhaps it would be possible. Japanese can be slightly easier to copy over as you dont have to worry as much about the spacing and number of characters. However, that being said, look at the timeframes. While we aren't exactly sure when he retrieved it, we know Taru Mikami has it starting November 27th, when he kills Demegawa of SakuraTV. From there we can assume he used it up until January 16th, as he sent Kiyomi Takada 5 pages, of which she could fill out 10 (front and back) pages worth of kills. Since we know Mikami commits a full page worth of murders every day this is a fair estimate. So -googles how many days between those dates- that comes out to a full 50 pages of death. As we can see in the anime these are top to bottom full of characters neatly stacked.

Now, I'm not going to sit and do all the math on how many names that is, but I'll play it safe. Mikami managed to write everyone's name in the room at the series finale on one single line, so assuming an average of 8 names per line, and 38 lines per page, comes out to 15,200 names that he has written total. I'm not even going to go into how many characters have to be used, let's just wrap this up.

So you're telling me that in one night, Gevanni managed to copy 15,200 names perfectly with the same exact penmanship as Mikami? Near himself said this took place “last night", so let's assume it was 24 hours. 24 hours is obviously a very generous number, the showdown at the warehouse took place near sundown, but we'll give him that much time. 15,200/24 means he managed to perfectly forge 633 (and some change) names per hour. I call absolute bullshit. 10 names a minute, perfectly resembling the original author's penmanship. On top of that he had to add any fold, crease, precise rip in each page. Near himself said it was a perfectly made duplicate.

Mikami is clearly atypical, and has some form of OCD or autism that drives his precise patterns and movements. I can say from my own experience that even if you made a perfect replica of my notebook it wouldnt take more than opening it up to the next page for me to realize something was off. For a man like him nothing short of a genuine clone would work. Back to the main point though, in a series based around gods of death and becoming god of the new world, I now present to you your new God.

Master of Pen and Paper

Stephen Gevanni, true name Stephen Loud. The physical manifestation of Deus Ex Machina.

*Edit added like 5 minutes later: Upon closer look at the first photo it actually seems like you can break it up into about 11 names per line. Making 20,900 names, 871 names per hour, and roughly 15 names per minute still assuming he

had a full 24 hours.

Could Death Note have ended better?

I was strongly hoping to see that by the end of the anime, it is revealed that L never died, and that Near and Mellow were "puppets", being controlled by L to catch Kira. But I know this is not that good an ending and that 50℅ of the fans were hoping this as well, or at least the fact that L should've been revealed to have faked his death but then, how would've Death Note been as dark and grim as already is, killing both of the two main protagonists, and possibly the "heroine" as well?

I wanted to see this ending only because I loved L's character, but I know his death was required for the plot, and that the ending I suggested is probably the worst way that Death Note could've ended. Now I think Tsugami Ohba has got one of the greatest minds in writing fiction, which is why his anime achieved the third highest rating among anime. That is why I'm in no position to judge how and how should not have Death Note ended. The way Death Note ends is excellent, but there could've been an addition of a few things (which is contradictory to what I just said). Because Light killed L, I hated him and so I think that he got what he deserved. But I also think that they should've shown whether or not it is revealed to the world who Kira really is, specifically to his mother and sister, and how did they both react.

Before watching the final episode, I guessed from the title, New World, that in the end, Light would win and succeed in creating the New World, hence the title of the episode. But I was proven wrong; Light looses and without Kira, the world becomes "New". That is what "New World" means, according to me. But, they should've shown scenes about how and what this New World is, about how this New World is different without Kira in it.3

What is death note?

The plot of death note is about a teenage genius who is bored with the world. He stumbles upon a death note left behind by a deathgod who is equally bored with his god-like realm. The main character then picks up the deathnote which kills anyone whose name is written in the notebook. The main character then uses the death note to create the perfect world by passing judgement upon criminals and later into the series anybody who stops him from becoming the next god of the new world he is creating. So international police from all over the world come together kinda to stop kira; the main character. A mass murderer that could kill while being far from its victims. Police see the killings are not normal. So they act because they believe someone is May be posioning all these people but lowkey, its a supernatural action. But the police have to figure that out hence why they call “the worlds best Detective” L. A man who could solve any crime no matter the circumstances.

So its a supernatual crime drama.

A fight against morals and reasoning.

Where L is a man who fights for truth and Justice but will use boardline criminal means to catch his man. Light wants to kill all criminals and those who stand in his way toward creating a perfect and crime free world.

In a sense. Both positions have a sense of Nobelity and Justice. But both are wrong about how they wish to obtain a perfect world with no crime or criminals. L believes in correcting wrongful behavior like we do now at the risk of that failing and someone going right back to crime. While light installs fear into every waking person on the planet. That no one was safe from kiras judjudgement that if you didnt follow kira. You were against kira/seen as a criminal in the new world and deserved to die.

Can any anime ever match Death Note?

The fact that you are asking this question tells us that you are new to anime and only watching due to a recommendation or hype.

So, first of all, YES. There are anime that not only match up to death note but are also better. You cannot compare The Great Escape to Finding Nemo or to Fight Club.

Once you start of on anime, there are genres and styles of anime.

You will find that comparing anime is very difficult. Some factors that affect all anime are :

story
animation
studio
dubbing (voice actor cast)
subs
year of make
genre
no. of episodes
ova/manga
music (opening and ending songs)

While story might look so simple to compare, it is not. Anime can bring about the most intelligent of twists and turn as well as the most stupid or obvious ones. Naruto (stating one you might have heard of- there are others also, one piece, detective conan, attack on titan, 7 deadly sins) started off as a fun ninja anime about a team completing missions. It turned out to be a whole lot serious and huge. Each anime has its own story to tell and there are rarely remakes (unless of course the ecchi genre). Maison Ikkoku is a love story anime that will grip you to the end even though 98 episodes long.

Animation is the easiest to compare. Although there are a lot of animation types. You have realistic looking, all 2-D (ugghh, I can’t describe them all properly). Just recently a manhua anime “Rakshasa Street” has a different style of animation than most. Death note had a different style than others. Naruto’s is different. One piece is different. Berserk has a different style. One punch man is different.

Studios play a major role in their animation. Hardcore anime fans also choose which anime to watch based on the studio. Because some studios put their all into making an anime successful, while some will choose the best manga to animate. Some studios will only animate for 12 episodes, some for 24, some 50 and some until the manga is over. Some studios are famous for not having a second season or third season however popular (like Valve). Some studios are known to mess up the manga a lot and continue the story as they see fit to adjust in their 12 episode slots.

Dubbing (not talking about the english one, but the actual dubbing) plays an important role. The most famous case being Dragon Ball Z and super series. The voice actor of Goku in english has a low pitched and sturdy voice as fits his physique but the japanese version has a high pitched fun voice as fits his character. Some voices don’t seem to match the character well. Some voices that will irritate you. Some voices seem unreal (natsumi’s voice in getbackers seems so off).

Subtitles play some role as not all anime will get subbed by the same people. Subtitles are the work of fans. So depending on their knowledge of Japanese they will translate. recent anime do get better subs but still not all of them. Watching an anime with poor subs is a task not many will do (I will not watch it). As you start watching anime, you will understand the meaning of few common words. The most recent one that irritates me is : Zen-ou-sama (zen-ou literally means “king of all”, which when spoken in anime becomes zeno-sama, which some sub it as king of all-sama, even though there is no name, he is also called zen-chan, which is again translated by some as all-chan, which is irritating) of Dragon Ball super.
Also the size and fonts of subs will also matter. Old anime have subs that are yellow in colour or italic, or too big for the screen/aspect ratio (used to 4:3).

Year of make will affect the sound quality, the animation, the voice actors, etc. So it does influence the anime but you will be surprised at the quality of anime they had even in 1990’s.

Genre. What everyone is talking about. There are so many genres that it is easy to get lost into. Comparing two genres is difficult. A single anime can have upto 12 genres. So unless and until both anime have the same genres, you cannot compare them. [I so wanted to write more on this topic but then I will get side tracked].

No. of episodes is mostly decided by the studio, the manga chapters, the arc lengths, the popularity. Although popularity may or may not have direct effect depends as many highly popular anime get only 12 episodes even though manga is ongoing. A 12 episode anime are the most common. they usually deal with a single arc of the manga. Introducing some characters and first battles. 24 episode animes deal with one major arc and usually keep some suspense or some awesome stuff for the next season. 50 episode animes are usually incomplete anime or left after sometime or they catch up to the manga too quick (like how game of thrones caught up with the books) and go on a hiatus. Other longer anime are the ones to actually watch as they are mostly good. The longer they are the more story-building and character development time they get. (Never ever judge an anime by its episode count). Some anime have been running longer than many anime watchers and have a deep connection with them. So someone who has been watching Naruto since first grade will like naruto more than death note.

All anime start with either a manga, a manhua or a manhwa. The more read they are, the more popular the anime. There is a reason why you cannot compare two anime as mostly studios mess around with the real story. They don’t introduce a character on 10th episode for a 12-episode season (which happens in the manga as it is continuous and not seasonal). so more often than not, there are some changes in the anime which lead to plot changes and don’t convey the mangaka’s visualization. Also some studios don’t take counsel from the mangaka and end up messing the anime.

Hardcore fans also just watch anime for their opening and ending songs. I know it sounds stupid but people do that. Opening and ending songs send a startling impression on a viewer. There will be huge amounts of criticism for a bad song/theme even if the episode is good af.

So next time you go asking someone whether an anime is better than this or not, you don’t look for reviews, you just watch it and you decide whether you felt good or not because anime does not need to make sense. It just needs to be felt good.

Also as an anime lover (not a hardcore) wouldn’t have suggested an anime as good as Death note for a first timer, as the next anime they watch might not be as good and would then leave a bad impression. Death note sets a very high bar in a wrong place.
